What should you write about?

Hey Reader,

Over the last 4 years, I've worked with thousands of writers, and one question I see beginners share all the time is this:

What should I even write about?!

There are many ways to decide what to write about, but I'll share a simple one today: Write what you care about.

One of the wonderful writers I got to work with this year is Melon Dash, an adult swimming instructor.

I was lucky to meet Melon in person back in June and have a deep conversation about her work and what writing means to her:

Melon has been a swimmer since her childhood and has been an educator for decades.

She founded the Miracle Swimming School to change how adults learn to swim, and regularly shows up on tv to talk about her expertise in teaching how to overcome your fear, and thus learn swimming with ease.

When I met Melon, she taught me her 5 Circles concept.

It's a fascinating framework that applies to learning anything in life - not just swimming, and I highly recommend you check out this brilliant video:

Melon is talking and writing about swimming because she can't not talk about it.

It's her mission to educate as many people as possible on the topic, so fewer people have to suffer from the consequences of not being able to swim.

She's been speaking about the topic for years and has even written a book about it.

Yet, she's new to the online writing world, which is why she joined Medium Writing Academy earlier this year.

Melon is taking her message to new platforms because she has a deep desire to help more people.

She cares so much about her message that she can't keep it to herself.

That's one way to decide what to write about: Think about what you can't not share.

What's important to you?

What's going wrong in the world?

What do you want to change so much that you can't stop speaking about it?!

Next week, I'll kick off a brand new opportunity to help you share your message with the world.

It's perfect if you've been thinking about writing on the internet for a while but haven't taken action yet.

I want you to get out of analysis paralysis and finally put your work out there so people can learn from your experiences, expertise, and your unique way of looking at the world.

Hey Reader, When I started to publish on Substack this summer, I received dozens of emails with questions like: Why did you start to write on Substack? Are you leaving Medium? Is Substack better than Medium? How did you grow your audience on Substack so quickly?! The short answer is that Substack is an addition to my existing channels like Medium and Convertkit. I'm not replacing those. And to be fair, Substack has proven to be an excellent addition with lots of benefits that I don't have on...

It's sad story time, Reader.. my friend canceled on me last Friday, and I was too lazy to make new plans. My fiancé Philip has been on a long walk (his newest obsession), so I was alone at home. And guess what a writer with no plans does on a Friday evening?! I wrote newsletters! My ✨creative juices✨ were flowing and I wrote three newsletters for you. Sent one on Friday. One is scheduled for later this week. And the third was supposed to be sent.. today. Except, it's gone. When I opened...

Hey Reader, I had a lot of interesting conversations about viral content this week: Is it good? Bad? Necessary? There's a lot to say on the topic, but I realized that the biggest question we should address is on the human side, not on platforms and algorithms. I just recorded a short video to explain why some pieces of content go viral and others flop (based on human behavior). Watch Now Let me know what you think about this concept by replying to this email. I'd love to dig deeper into this...
