Should you write on Medium?

As a writer, one of the important decisions you make is where to publish your work.

This is true when you're looking for a publisher for your book but it's also crucial when you write online and want to get in front of the right audience.

I went all-in on Medium because it's hands-down the most rewarding platform for writers who write:

  • educational or personal stories
  • longer form content (the average Medium story should contain at least 800 words)
  • based on their personal experience or deep research

Medium is different than the rest of the internet because the platform is ad-free and highlights thoughtful, human writing.

If you hate fast-paced social media platforms and confusing algorithms, you'll love Medium's human-centered ecosystem.

But of course, the question remains: Is it worth it? Aka: Will my work be seen if I publish it on Medium?

The short answer is yes. Your work will be seen if you know how to best use Medium.

I want to share a brilliant example with you today

Here are the stats of an article my client Peter has published last month:

It's a brilliantly simple piece about a common problem: Forgetting someone's name.

The whole piece is based on Peter's experience at an event and backed up by specific examples that actually help you find a way out if you ever forget someone's name.

The piece has already been seen by more than 60,000 readers and generated thousands of dollars in earnings through Medium's Partner Program.

Hundreds of readers started to follow Peter after discovering the piece, which helped him cross 1,000 followers on Medium. 👏

When we started to work together, Peter was brand new to Medium and this is only the fourth piece he published.

Now imagine for a second what it'd mean if you could share your message or passion with tens of thousands of readers - despite being new to a platform.

If you can replicate these numbers, you can quickly build a significant email list and turn your writing into a reliable career.

Clear, specific, and personal stories that are useful for readers have the best chances to get Boosted on Medium. 🚀

And if I'm completely honest, Boosting plays a crucial role for distribution right now. It's not impossible to do well without getting boosted but it's very hard.

Before the viral piece, Peter published another story about being struck by lightning, which only got 42 views in total.

Peter was deeply passionate about the story, but it didn't have a clear point or message for the reader, which means it had a close to zero chance of getting boosted.

My point is that Medium is absolutely worth it if you enjoy writing and are willing to learn how to get the most out of the platform.

Just like any platform, there's a learning curve.

You can't just publish content and hope that it'll go viral.

You have to be familiar with the content guidelines, work with reputable publications, and write stories readers are genuinely interested in.

And what most people underestimate is the relationships you build with readers on Medium.

On social media, your audience typically spends a few seconds on your posts. It's fast-paced and most people are playing the quantity game by publishing several times a day. 🔁

But if readers spend 6 minutes reading your story on Medium, they are invested in your work. There's a relationship and trust thanks to quality and depth, which makes Medium the perfect platform for those who like to take a long-term approach to writing on the internet.

And frankly, expanding to other platforms and repurposing your content is easier when you start with deep, long-form writing and establish trust with a large audience first.

If you like the idea of publishing your writing on a platform with genuine readers sharing your message with the world, you'll love my Medium Writing Academy.

Hey Reader, When I started to publish on Substack this summer, I received dozens of emails with questions like: Why did you start to write on Substack? Are you leaving Medium? Is Substack better than Medium? How did you grow your audience on Substack so quickly?! The short answer is that Substack is an addition to my existing channels like Medium and Convertkit. I'm not replacing those. And to be fair, Substack has proven to be an excellent addition with lots of benefits that I don't have on...

Hey Reader, Over the last 4 years, I've worked with thousands of writers, and one question I see beginners share all the time is this: What should I even write about?! There are many ways to decide what to write about, but I'll share a simple one today: Write what you care about. One of the wonderful writers I got to work with this year is Melon Dash, an adult swimming instructor. I was lucky to meet Melon in person back in June and have a deep conversation about her work and what writing...

It's sad story time, Reader.. my friend canceled on me last Friday, and I was too lazy to make new plans. My fiancé Philip has been on a long walk (his newest obsession), so I was alone at home. And guess what a writer with no plans does on a Friday evening?! I wrote newsletters! My ✨creative juices✨ were flowing and I wrote three newsletters for you. Sent one on Friday. One is scheduled for later this week. And the third was supposed to be sent.. today. Except, it's gone. When I opened...
