Your (boring) writing business

Hey Reader,

I'm back from an amazing yoga festival, a trip to the Austrian countryside, and a day in Munich, where I met writer friends.

Physically, I'm back in the office.

Mentally, I'm dying of excitement because I'm going to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour next week!

I'll be at a pre-event on Wednesday, at the concert on Thursday + Friday, and outside the stadium on Friday (unless I get last-minute tickets!)

When I told my friends about my plans, they were stunned that I'm taking three days off work to go to the same concert.

But hey, that's the beauty of being your own boss: You make the rules. 😉

I spent the past 6 years building a creator business that allows me to:

  • Work 25 hours per week
  • Travel for several months per year
  • While making 6-figure profits

And if I'm 100% honest, my business is stupidly simple.

I've been doing the same things since 2020: writing content, sending newsletters, selling digital products.

I’ve seen dozens of new platforms and exciting opportunities come and go.

I run a community with over 20,000 writers, and the harsh truth is that most people fail to grow an audience because they’re impatient.

I’ve been writing on the same platform for over half a decade.

I’ve sent over 1,000 newsletters.

And I’ve been selling the same offers for years.

If you want to make (more) money by writing or creating content on the internet, your business should be boring. 🥱

If you don't do the same things for long enough, you won't ever become good at what you do.

And guess what?

There's a lot of noise on the internet.

If you want to create content for a living, you need to shift your perspective and view the boring, repetitive work as the building blocks of your success.

Big love from my screen to yours,
Sinem

Hey Reader, When I started to publish on Substack this summer, I received dozens of emails with questions like: Why did you start to write on Substack? Are you leaving Medium? Is Substack better than Medium? How did you grow your audience on Substack so quickly?! The short answer is that Substack is an addition to my existing channels like Medium and Convertkit. I'm not replacing those. And to be fair, Substack has proven to be an excellent addition with lots of benefits that I don't have on...

Hey Reader, Over the last 4 years, I've worked with thousands of writers, and one question I see beginners share all the time is this: What should I even write about?! There are many ways to decide what to write about, but I'll share a simple one today: Write what you care about. One of the wonderful writers I got to work with this year is Melon Dash, an adult swimming instructor. I was lucky to meet Melon in person back in June and have a deep conversation about her work and what writing...

It's sad story time, Reader.. my friend canceled on me last Friday, and I was too lazy to make new plans. My fiancé Philip has been on a long walk (his newest obsession), so I was alone at home. And guess what a writer with no plans does on a Friday evening?! I wrote newsletters! My ✨creative juices✨ were flowing and I wrote three newsletters for you. Sent one on Friday. One is scheduled for later this week. And the third was supposed to be sent.. today. Except, it's gone. When I opened...
